General Studies

Jessie Kerr-Whitt-Kindergarten

Mrs. Kerr-Whitt loves having the opportunity to teach both general and Judaic studies to Kindergartners.  She is proud to have a classroom that is a warm community where students can discover their unique potential in a setting responsive to individual needs, where each child is nurtured, and where character-building takes place.  Mrs. Kerr-Whitt is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a master’s degree in curriculum development from SUNY Oswego.  She holds permanent New York State certification for pre-school through 6th grade.  She has been teaching at SHDS since 1983 and prior to that she taught in a pre-school in Hamilton, NY and the Gan in Kibbutz Ein Harod Me’uhad in Israel as a volunteer.  She believes that being an educator is a great responsibility and privilege, and she is delighted to be part of the SHDS family.

Katie Rose-Kindergarten

What Mrs. Rose loves best about teaching at SHDS is the family community atmosphere!  A graduate of SUNY Oswego, she holds a master’s degree from LeMoyne College in special education.  She has been teaching at SHDS since 1988 and prior to that taught in the East Syracuse-Minoa and Liverpool Central School Districts.  Mrs. Rose believes that by demonstrating self-confidence, dedication, and enthusiasm for all of the students at SHDS provides for an enriching learning environment where all children can learn and grow.

Alea SmithAlea Smith-Grades 1 & 2

First grade is a year full of tremendous growth in learning for students. Students are given the opportunity to achieve greater independence, develop character, and learn through exploration both individually and through peer collaboration and teamwork. The first grade curriculum is designed to target specific learning needs of each individual, aligning with the New York State Common Core standards. The curriculum includes several science and social studies topics that are integrated into daily reading, writing, math, and technology activities. First grade students learn strategies that assist them in becoming independent thinkers and problem solvers. They are guided to have rich and deep discussions about a variety of topics and texts.

Her public school experience includes teaching in the West Genesee School district and the Cazenovia School district.  Here at SHDS she has taught General Studies in grades 3, 5 and 6, though she loves teaching third grade the most! Melissa Klemperer-Grade 5

Mrs. Klemperer received a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 2009 and a master’s degree from LeMoyne College in 2012 with a concentration in childhood and special education.  She did her student teaching right here at the Syracuse Hebrew Day School.  Before becoming a 5th grade teacher, she was a pre-kindergarten teacher at the Jewish Community Center.  Although Mrs. Klemperer has only been teaching 5th grade for a short time, it feels as though she has been here forever!  She is very happy to be back at SHDS building relationships with the students, faculty, and community members.  She is looking forward to learning and growing with her students as they embark on the wonderful journey of education together.
